LIBRARY

WE ALL LOVE A GOOD BOOK

“libraries store the energy that fuels the imagination. they open up windows to the world and inspire us to explore and achieve, and contribute to improving our quality of life.”

Sidney Sheldon (1917-2007. American writer and producer)

At Greenacre International School we value the role that books and reading play in children’s development.

We encourage the love of books from early years all the way through your child’s learning journey.

Reading sparks children’s imagination,  helps develop creativity and emotional intelligence, furthers language development and introduces children to the wider world.

Our library is constantly expanding with new and exciting resources that challenge all levels of readers and help develop critical thinking, comprehension and language skills.

Each year the whole school takes part in World Book Day as part of  the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) drive to promote the love of reading.  We encourage students to ditch the school uniform and attend school that day dressed as their favourite book character. It’s always such a delight when we see our students turning up as Harry Potter or The Gruffalo!

Reading

At Greenacre we encourage all children to read both in school and at home. Reading is incorporated into the timetable and we have the oxford reading tree books that help to develop a child’s love for reading and ensure rapid progress. Phonics lessons start in the foundation stage and play an essential part in helping students learn how to spell words. When a child is taught phonics, the child will be able to recognize sounds in words and will be able to spell them correctly. ‘Phonics’ involves teaching children that letters, or groups of letters, make certain sounds. Children are taught to put together or ‘build up’ the sounds for unfamiliar written words by changing letters into sounds and blending the sounds together. Alongside phonics we teach a range of strategies to develop reading and understanding including looking at the illustrations, context-based clues and deciding whether a sentence makes sense. Further reading opportunities are provided through whole class shared reading, daily guided reading sessions and independent reading times. In addition, we are proud to provide all children with frequent access to our school library.

We value the support parents and carers give to their children by reading regularly with them at home. We recognise the positive contribution this makes to children’s progress, attainment and enjoyment of reading.
